When many visitors come to Carlsbad Caverns National Park, they are headed to the Big Room, the fifth largest natural chamber in the United States. Over thousands of years, the water has created incredible limestone formations throughout the cavern. Guests love the cave wildlife, including seventeen species of bats.

One of the largest powwows in the nation, the Gathering of Nations welcomes members of more than 500 tribes from all across North America. During the event, visitors will be able to catch a glimpse into diverse cultures, most notably through the art of dance.

Many people don’t associate skiing with New Mexico, but don’t let the desert fool you. Taos Ski Valley is a great location for skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and any other winter activities. The mountain views are so gorgeous that many people venture to the area to host their wedding.

4. The Candy Lady

This candy shop has been an Albuquerque institution for decades, but it gained national notoriety when its rock candy was used as crystal meth in Breaking Bad. The Candy Lady serves a variety of sweets, including some that contain New Mexican chile peppers.

3. Route 66
 
                                        Made popular by the American standard of the same name, the historic highway runs from Santa Monica, California, to Chicago, Illinois, displaying some of the most scenic views in the United States. The New Mexico stretch of Route 66 predominantly features several monuments, including Madonna of the Trail.

2. Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta
 
                                        Since it's founding in 1972 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of 770 KKOB radio, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta has been an annual tradition ever since. The largest hot air balloon festival in the world, this nine-day event showcases more than 500 balloons each year.
